The UK Home Office recommends the fitting of five-lever mortice locks to British Standard BS3621 to all external doors. Many insurance companies require this as a minimum standard; please also note that the police recommend this level of security.
Mortice locks are fitted into the door itself and can only be opened with the key. They are normally found on external doors in addition to a cylinder lock or night latch.
Mortice locks are often referred to as a sash lock or deadlock. A deadlock is a mortice lock which has just a key hole and a bolt. A sash lock has a keyhole, a bolt and a latch which can be operated by a handle.
Mortice locks are available in 2, 3, 5 and 7 levers. 5 lever and above can be British Standard or non British Standard. The more levers there are the more difficult the lock is to pick and therefore the more secure it is.
01903 Locksmiths recommend all external wooden doors should have a 5 Lever mortice lock fitted/replaced to BS3621 standard, check if your mortice lock has the British Standard Kite-mark symbol on the visible plate on the side of the door.
The key advantage of a mortice lock is you cannot reach inside and unlock the door, you must use the key at all times to lock or unlock the door from either side.
01903 Locksmiths can supply and fit a new BS3621 5 lever mortice sash or deadlock from scratch to your external/internal wooden door or replace your existing mortice lock with a BS3621 5 lever mortice sash or deadlock.
If you have a UPVC or metal door than it is likely that you have a euro cylinder lock or oval cylinder lock.
Most wooden external door locks are cylinder locks. If your door locks automatically when you close it and you need a key to open the door from the outside, but it opens without a key from the inside by operating the latch, then you have a cylinder lock which is also known as a night latch.
Night latches are fitted to the surface of the inside of the door with a connecting cylinder, which is fitted into the door with the keyhole on the outside.
01903 Locksmiths can replace cylinders only or we can supply and fit a new night latch complete with cylinder from scratch to any wooden door.
